A clinician may look for redness, swelling, discharge, wax, a foreign object or changes to the eardrum. The examination can help assess earache, reduced hearing, itching and symptoms after a cold. The view is only one part of the assessment; age, symptoms and the appearance of both ears can change what the finding means.

The device has a small disposable or cleaned tip that rests at the entrance of the canal. It should be inserted gently, and a child may need reassurance or a parent’s support to stay still.

Tell the clinician about pain, fever, discharge, hearing change, dizziness, recent swimming and anything placed in the ear. Do not push cotton buds or objects into the canal before the appointment. If wax blocks the view, the clinician may discuss safe removal rather than trying to scrape it at home.

Seek urgent care for sudden hearing loss, severe dizziness, swelling behind the ear, a serious injury, or discharge with marked pain or fever. Arrange assessment for persistent ear pain, repeated discharge or hearing difficulty, particularly in a young child.

Ask whether the canal and eardrum were visible, what finding explains the symptoms, whether hearing should be checked, and which treatments or follow-up are appropriate.
