The correct assessment, instructions and follow-up depend on why it is being used, your pregnancy status, other medicines and relevant health conditions. Do not take tablets supplied loose, without a labelled pack, or by a seller who cannot provide pharmacy details.

Misoprostol causes the uterus to contract and also protects the stomach lining in some circumstances. Clinicians use it in different care pathways, including miscarriage management and induction of labour. The dose, route, timing and necessary monitoring are not interchangeable between these uses.

For pregnancy-related care, an assessment may be needed to establish pregnancy location and stage. Misoprostol does not treat an ectopic pregnancy, which can cause dangerous internal bleeding even if vaginal bleeding occurs after the medicine.
