What should you know about buttock cellulitis?

The infection affects deeper layers of skin and soft tissue, so the area may feel hot, tight, swollen, or painful rather than simply discoloured. A small cut, insect bite, shaving irritation, pressure injury, or another skin problem can let bacteria enter. Athlete's foot may provide another entry point through cracked skin. Cellulitis can occur on one buttock or around the crease, and its border may enlarge over time.

Arrange a same-day or prompt clinical review. A clinician may examine the skin, check for an abscess, and prescribe an antibiotic when cellulitis is diagnosed. Take treatment exactly as directed and keep the area clean; do not squeeze, lance, or massage a tender lump. Marking the edge of redness can help you notice whether it is moving outward. Tell the clinician if you have Type 2 Diabetes, reduced immunity, or a previous episode.

Seek urgent medical care if redness is rapidly expanding, pain is severe or out of proportion, the skin becomes dusky or blistered, or you develop Fever, shaking, confusion, faintness, fast breathing, or marked weakness. These features can signal a deeper infection or Sepsis. A soft centre, drainage, or a rapidly enlarging lump may indicate an abscess that needs a different procedure.

Ask whether the area is cellulitis, an abscess, or another cause of Skin Redness; whether a wound or fungal infection needs treatment; what improvement to expect; and which changes should bring you back urgently.
