What should you know about butt razor burn?

Freshly shaved skin can sting when friction, sweat, tight clothing, or fragranced products irritate the surface. Small red bumps around hairs may be ingrown hairs, where a cut hair curls back into the skin. Folliculitis can look similar when a hair follicle becomes inflamed. A painful lump with spreading redness, warmth, or drainage is less typical of simple razor irritation. Keratosis pilaris can also cause persistent rough follicle-based bumps, but it is not caused by one shaving session.

Pause shaving and avoid picking, squeezing, or digging for hairs. Rinse with lukewarm water, pat dry, and use a bland, fragrance-free moisturiser. Loose, breathable underwear can reduce rubbing, while changing out of damp clothing helps limit friction. Avoid harsh scrubs, alcohol-based products, and deodorant applied to the area. When the skin has settled, use a clean sharp razor, shave in the direction of hair growth, and avoid repeated passes. If episodes keep returning, discuss alternative hair-removal methods, including Laser Hair Removal, with a qualified clinician.

Arrange medical assessment if redness is spreading, the area feels hot, pain is worsening, pus is present, or you develop fever. Seek prompt care for severe pain, rapidly increasing swelling, or a deep tender lump.
