Buscopan and ulcerative colitis: what to know

Ulcerative colitis causes inflammation in the lining of the large bowel. A flare can bring abdominal pain, urgency, diarrhoea, rectal bleeding, tiredness, and reduced appetite. Buscopan is an antispasmodic: it relaxes certain bowel muscles and may lessen cramp, but it does not calm the immune-driven inflammation. Pain can also signal complications or another problem, so relief after a dose does not prove that the bowel disease is controlled. Prescribed maintenance or flare treatment should not be stopped without medical advice.

Follow your ulcerative colitis treatment plan and use Buscopan only if a clinician or pharmacist says it is suitable for you. Keep a record of stool frequency, blood, urgency, pain, fever, hydration, and medicines. Drink fluids in small frequent amounts if diarrhoea is present, unless a clinician has advised fluid restriction. Avoid self-treating a worsening flare with repeated antispasmodic doses. Seek urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening abdominal pain, a swollen or firm abdomen, heavy rectal bleeding, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, high fever, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine. Contact your clinician promptly when diarrhoea or bleeding is increasing, you cannot keep fluids down, or your usual treatment is not controlling symptoms. Do not wait for a routine appointment if you feel acutely unwell.

Ask whether the pain is likely spasm or active inflammation, whether Buscopan is safe with your current medicines, and what action plan applies when diarrhoea or bleeding increases.
