Removal of the elbow bursa sac: what to expect

Short answer

Elbow bursa removal, or bursectomy, removes the irritated sac over the point of the elbow when persistent or complicated bursitis warrants surgery.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

Many cases can be managed without an operation. The choice depends on the cause, repeated flare-ups, wound or infection concerns, functional impact, and response to suitable non-surgical measures.

What the procedure addresses

The olecranon bursa is a thin cushioning sac between the skin and the pointed elbow bone. Direct pressure, a blow, inflammatory disease, or infection can make it fill and thicken. A surgeon distinguishes these patterns because infected bursitis requires a different care plan from a sterile, pressure-related swelling.

During removal, the surgeon works in an area where the skin can be vulnerable to tension and repeated contact. Protecting the incision and avoiding pressure on the elbow are therefore central parts of early recovery.

How to prepare and recover

Tell the team about drainage, broken skin, fever, prior aspiration, antibiotics, inflammatory conditions, blood-thinning medicines, and nicotine use. Confirm which medicines to pause or continue using instructions from the treating clinicians.

After the operation, keep the dressing clean and follow the stated movement limits. Elevation and permitted hand and wrist movement may help control swelling, but do not lean on the wound or start strengthening until cleared. Ask how bathing, work, driving, stitches, and physiotherapy will be handled.

Warning signs after surgery

Contact the surgical service promptly if the incision leaks, separates, becomes increasingly red or hot, or if fever or worsening pain appears. Urgent assessment is needed for rapidly expanding swelling, uncontrolled bleeding, or new weakness or marked numbness in the hand. A cold, pale, or blue hand needs emergency evaluation.

Points to settle before consent

Discuss whether infection has been excluded or confirmed, what has made surgery appropriate now, how the skin and wound will be protected, when you may bend the elbow, and which home or work tasks will require temporary help.

Questions people ask

Is elbow bursa removal the first treatment for swelling?

Usually not. The clinician assesses the cause and may use pressure avoidance, protection, medication, aspiration, or infection treatment when appropriate before considering removal.

Will the elbow still have cushioning after the bursa is removed?

The body can heal the area without the original inflamed sac, but the incision and underlying tissues need protection while they recover. Your surgeon can explain how this applies to your work and sports.
