Burping and palpitations: what to know

Burping may come from swallowed air or reflux, while palpitations are an awareness of the heartbeat. Anxiety, dehydration, low blood sugar, caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, and some medicines can contribute to either sensation. Anaemia, iron-deficiency anaemia, an overactive thyroid, or an abnormal rhythm such as atrial fibrillation may cause palpitations with other symptoms. Heart failure can cause breathlessness, swelling, or reduced exercise tolerance. Burping does not explain every heartbeat symptom, and the combination does not identify one condition.

Sit down, breathe slowly, and note when the sensation began, how long it lasts, whether the rhythm feels regular, and what you were doing. Drink fluids if you may be dehydrated, eat if you have missed a meal, and limit caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol. Arrange an appointment for repeated episodes, especially with dizziness, fatigue, breathlessness, or a known heart or thyroid problem.

Seek emergency help for palpitations with chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, confusion, or new weakness. Urgent assessment is also needed if a fast or irregular heartbeat does not settle, or if you feel acutely unwell. Do not drive yourself if you might faint.

Ask whether you need an ECG, blood tests for anaemia or thyroid problems, or a longer heart monitor. Bring a list of medicines, supplements, stimulants, and episode details.
