Burping and farting causes

Short answer
Burping and farting together usually reflect swallowed air, digestive fermentation, food intolerance, or a stomach or bowel illness.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common contributors
- Swallowed air, fizzy drinks and fermentable foods
- Concerning additions
- Severe pain, dehydration, bleeding or jaundice
Why both can happen
Air swallowed while eating, drinking quickly, chewing gum or having fizzy drinks may leave through either end of the digestive tract. Gut bacteria make gas as they break down some carbohydrates, and constipation can make bloating more noticeable. Acid reflux or gastritis may add upper abdominal discomfort and belching. Food poisoning and gastroenteritis commonly bring gas with diarrhoea, cramps or vomiting. Less common problems, including gallstones or hepatitis A, are more concerning when symptoms include significant upper abdominal pain, jaundice or marked illness.
Practical steps
Eat slowly, chew well and reduce fizzy drinks. Keep a short food and symptom diary rather than removing many foods at once. Gentle movement and regular fluids may support bowel function. During diarrhoea or vomiting, focus on small frequent sips to replace fluid. Avoid alcohol while unwell, and seek advice before taking medicine for persistent symptoms.
When to seek care
Arrange medical advice for ongoing or worsening bloating, a persistent change in bowel habit, repeated vomiting, unexplained weight loss or pain that keeps returning. Seek urgent help for severe abdominal pain, a swollen rigid abdomen, blood or black stool, inability to keep fluids down, confusion, faintness, or yellow skin or eyes.
Questions for your doctor
Could my symptoms be related to a food, constipation, reflux or infection? Which details from my diary matter most? Do I need an examination or tests because of the duration, pain or bowel changes?

Questions people ask
Can one food cause both burping and farting?
Yes. A food may increase swallowed air, reflux or gas made during digestion, but patterns vary between people.
When should gas symptoms be checked?
Seek advice for persistent change, repeated vomiting, weight loss, significant pain, bleeding or signs of dehydration.
