Burping and ear pain

Burping usually reflects swallowed air or digestive symptoms. Ear pain can arise from earwax buildup, a middle-ear infection, a common cold or sinusitis. Pressure in the nose and throat can make the ear feel blocked or painful, especially during swallowing, but burping itself does not usually injure the ear. Tonsillitis, dental problems and jaw tension can also cause pain felt near the ear. The timing of both symptoms may be coincidental.

Eat slowly and reduce fizzy drinks if burping is bothersome. For congestion, fluids, rest and gentle nasal care may help. Keep water out of a painful ear and do not insert cotton buds or objects. Ear-wax removal should be guided by a clinician or pharmacist, particularly if there is discharge, a perforation history or reduced hearing. Antibiotic treatment is not suitable for every earache.

Arrange a review for ear pain that persists, worsening hearing, fever, discharge, dizziness or repeated episodes. Seek urgent help for swelling behind the ear, severe headache, facial weakness, sudden hearing loss, or feeling seriously unwell. Get digestive advice if burping comes with repeated vomiting, severe abdominal pain or black stools.
