What should you know about burping a lot and feeling sick?

Short answer
Frequent burping with nausea can follow swallowed air or reflux, while infection, stomach irritation and other illnesses are also possible.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common contributors
- Swallowed air, reflux, gastritis and stomach infections
- Watch for
- Dehydration, severe pain, confusion or yellowing skin
Possible causes
Eating quickly, chewing gum and fizzy drinks can increase swallowed air, bloating and burping. Acid reflux or gastritis may produce nausea, upper abdominal discomfort, burning or a sour taste. Food poisoning and gastroenteritis can begin with nausea and burping before vomiting or diarrhoea. Gallstones may cause nausea with steady pain under the right ribs. Heat exhaustion can cause nausea with heavy sweating, weakness and dizziness, while low blood sugar may cause shakiness, sweating and confusion. Hepatitis A can cause nausea with marked tiredness, dark urine or yellowing of the skin.
What may help
Take small sips of fluid and choose light foods when you can tolerate them. Eat slowly, reduce fizzy drinks and avoid lying flat soon after meals. Rest in a cool place if heat exposure is relevant. If you have diabetes or use glucose-lowering medicine, follow your personal low-sugar plan. Seek advice if nausea persists, you cannot keep fluids down, or symptoms repeatedly return.
When to seek urgent care
Get urgent help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, chest pain, severe abdominal pain, blood in vomit or stool, repeated vomiting, very little urine, or yellow skin with worsening illness. Heat-related symptoms that do not improve after cooling and fluids also need prompt assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Could reflux, infection or a medicine be causing this? Do my symptoms suggest dehydration or low blood sugar? What should I eat and drink while nausea continues?
