What should you know about burnt swollen lips?

Hot food, sun, cosmetics, toothpaste, or a new medicine can irritate lip skin. Contact with a trigger may cause burning, redness, dryness or peeling. Sudden deeper swelling of the lips, eyelids, tongue or throat can be [Angioedema](/conditions/angioedema/), which may occur with hives or may appear without them.

The appearance does not identify the cause. A clinician may need to ask when the swelling began, what touched the lips, and whether there was a new food, medicine, sting, or dental product.

Move away from the suspected trigger and rinse the lips gently with cool water. A cool, clean compress can ease discomfort; avoid ice directly on the skin. Do not pop blisters, scrub peeling skin, apply fragranced products, or use a product that previously caused stinging.

If a clinician has given you an allergy action plan, follow it. Do not take a new medicine to treat the swelling unless a healthcare professional says it is suitable, especially if you take other medicines or are pregnant.

Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, wheezing, throat tightness, difficulty swallowing, a swollen tongue, faintness, confusion, or rapidly worsening swelling. Get prompt medical advice for extensive blistering, severe pain, pus, fever, or swelling after a chemical exposure. Arrange assessment if symptoms persist or recur without a clear trigger.

Ask whether the pattern suggests a burn, contact reaction, infection, or angioedema; which products and medicines to avoid; and what to do if swelling returns. Mention every recent food, medicine, cosmetic, dental product, and insect exposure.
