Burnout and depression

Short answer
Burnout is linked to prolonged stress in a role, while depression can affect mood, interest and functioning across life and needs clinical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How they can overlap
Burnout often begins around a demanding job, course or caring role and may ease when the person is away from that setting. Depression may bring persistent sadness, emptiness or loss of interest in activities, including time that is usually restorative. Fatigue, poor sleep, daytime sleepiness, irritability, anxiety and difficulty concentrating can occur with either, so symptoms alone cannot establish the cause.
The distinction is not always clear, and both problems can occur together. A clinician will consider mood, interest, sleep, physical health, medicines, substance use and how symptoms affect different parts of life.
What to do next
Arrange a primary-care or mental-health appointment if low mood, loss of interest or exhaustion is persisting. Before the visit, note when symptoms began, whether they change away from work, your sleep pattern, appetite, concentration and any safety concerns. Reduce avoidable demands where possible, keep basic routines, and tell someone trustworthy how you are doing.
Do not stop prescribed medicines or make major treatment changes without medical advice. A clinician can discuss psychological support, treatment options and practical changes suited to the diagnosis.
When to seek care
Seek prompt care when symptoms interfere with work, study, relationships, self-care or sleep. Get urgent help for thoughts of self-harm, feeling unable to stay safe, severe agitation, confusion or loss of contact with reality. Contact local emergency services if immediate danger is present.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your pattern suggests burnout, depression, insomnia or another condition; what physical checks may be useful; and which support should begin first. Ask how to monitor worsening mood and where to obtain urgent help.

Questions people ask
Can burnout turn into depression?
Persistent work stress may coexist with or contribute to depression, but only an assessment can clarify what is happening.
Does feeling better on a day off rule out depression?
No. Improvement with rest can suggest a work-related pattern, but it does not exclude depression or another condition.
