Burning sore throat

A common cold, influenza, COVID-19, tonsillitis, or strep throat may inflame the throat and cause burning pain, especially with fever, cough, swollen glands, or painful swallowing. Allergic rhinitis can create post-nasal drip that irritates the throat. Acid reflux may cause burning higher in the throat, often with sour taste, throat clearing, or symptoms after meals. Glandular fever is another possibility when marked tiredness and swollen glands accompany a sore throat. These conditions can look alike early on.

Drink fluids regularly and choose warm or cool drinks according to what feels soothing. Soft foods, rest, and avoiding smoke can reduce irritation. Gargling with salty water may help some adults who can gargle safely. A pharmacist can discuss suitable pain relief and whether testing or a medical review is appropriate; antibiotics are not useful for every sore throat.

Seek emergency care if you are struggling to breathe, cannot swallow saliva, are drooling, or develop rapidly increasing swelling in the throat or neck. Arrange prompt assessment for severe one-sided throat pain, a muffled voice, dehydration, a persistent high temperature, a rash, or symptoms that are worsening rather than settling. A sore throat that keeps returning or does not improve also deserves review.
