Burning sensation in your throat and chest

Reflux may move upward from the stomach, causing a hot or sour sensation behind the breastbone and into the throat. It can be worse after a large meal, bending, or lying down, and may occur with regurgitation, hoarseness, or a cough. Gastritis, a peptic ulcer, or a hiatus hernia can produce related upper digestive symptoms. The location and timing are useful clues, but they do not by themselves rule out other causes of chest discomfort.

Try smaller portions and stay upright after meals. Identify personal triggers such as late eating, alcohol, coffee, chocolate, or spicy food rather than removing every food unnecessarily. Raise the upper body during sleep if symptoms mainly occur at night, using a safe supportive arrangement. A pharmacist or doctor can advise about acid reflux medication, especially if symptoms are frequent or you take other medicines.

Get emergency help for chest pressure or burning that is severe, persistent, or spreading to the arm, jaw, back, or neck, particularly with breathlessness, sweating, faintness, or nausea. Seek prompt medical care for difficulty or pain when swallowing, repeated vomiting, blood in vomit, black stools, unexplained weight loss, or symptoms that repeatedly wake you. A new chest symptom deserves caution even when reflux seems possible.
