Burning Pins and Needles in the Hands

Tingling after leaning on an arm or sleeping awkwardly often improves when pressure is removed. Repeated wrist or hand use can irritate a nerve and cause burning, numbness, or weakness in particular fingers. Peripheral Neuropathy can affect sensation in the hands; Type 2 Diabetes is one possible underlying condition, while Vitamin B12 Deficiency and Hypothyroidism can also contribute. Anxiety or a Panic Disorder episode may cause tingling during rapid breathing, usually with other short-lived symptoms. Symptoms that begin suddenly on one side with facial drooping, speech trouble, vision change, severe dizziness, or loss of balance may indicate a Stroke or Transient Ischaemic Attack.

Change position, loosen tight clothing or wrist supports, and gently move the fingers without forcing a painful joint. Take breaks from repetitive gripping and note which fingers are affected, whether both hands are involved, and how long episodes last. Protect numb skin from heat, sharp tools, and pressure because reduced sensation can hide an injury. Arrange a clinical review for recurring symptoms, weakness, dropping objects, or tingling that wakes you. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice.

Call emergency services for sudden hand numbness or tingling with facial weakness, trouble speaking, new confusion, severe headache, or difficulty walking. Seek urgent assessment for rapidly worsening weakness, a cold or blue hand, severe swelling, or symptoms after a significant injury. Make a routine appointment when symptoms persist, spread to the arms or feet, disturb sleep, or occur with fatigue, weight change, thirst, or balance problems. Early examination can help identify nerve compression or a treatable underlying cause.
