Short answer

Burning and swelling in a knee indicate irritated tissues or fluid accumulation and deserve assessment when severe, sudden or persistent.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Key observation
Note whether swelling began after a twist, impact or gradual activity.
Avoid
Never attempt to drain a swollen knee yourself.
Urgent pattern
A hot swollen knee with fever requires urgent assessment.

What these symptoms tell you

The combination may follow injury or overuse, or develop with inflammation inside or around the joint. The location, onset and accompanying symptoms matter more than the burning sensation alone.

Patterns that help narrow the cause

A twisting injury followed by swelling, catching or instability can occur with an ACL or meniscus tear. Swelling at the front of the knee may arise from an irritated bursa, while fullness behind it can accompany a Baker's cyst. Knee osteoarthritis often presents with stiffness and activity-related aching as well as episodic swelling.

A suddenly hot, red and very tender knee can be a presentation of gout, but joint infection can produce a similar urgent pattern and must be considered. Burning closer to the skin may also reflect superficial irritation or nerve sensitivity. A clinician uses examination and, when indicated, imaging or a sample of joint fluid to distinguish these causes.

Steps while arranging assessment

Pause the activity that triggered symptoms and avoid deep squats, kneeling or twisting if these make the knee worse. Rest it in a supported position, use a cool pack wrapped in cloth for short intervals, and elevate the leg when comfortable.

Do not force movement through sharp pain or attempt to drain the knee yourself. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on pain medicine after considering stomach, kidney and heart conditions, blood-thinning treatment and other medicines. Keep track of trauma, fever, skin changes, locking and whether you can bear weight.

Red flags and timely review

Seek urgent medical assessment for a hot, red, markedly swollen knee with fever or feeling unwell. The same urgency applies if you cannot bear weight after an injury, the knee is visibly deformed, or the foot becomes cold, pale or numb.

Get prompt advice if swelling increases quickly, the joint locks, the knee repeatedly gives way, or calf swelling and pain develop. Arrange a non-emergency review when symptoms persist, recur or interfere with sleep and ordinary walking, even if there was no clear injury.

Points to cover in the consultation

Ask whether the swelling is inside the joint or in surrounding tissue, which movements are safe, and whether examination suggests injury, arthritis, crystal inflammation or infection. If joint aspiration is discussed, clarify whether its purpose is to relieve pressure, analyse the fluid, or both, and what aftercare is needed.

Questions people ask

Why does a swollen knee feel like it is burning?

Inflamed joint lining, a bursa, skin or sensitive nerves can create a burning quality. Examination is needed to locate the affected tissue and interpret it alongside warmth, redness and movement.

Should I exercise a burning, swollen knee?

Avoid movements that increase pain, swelling, locking or instability. Gentle comfortable movement may prevent stiffness, but sudden swelling after injury or an inability to bear weight should be assessed before exercise resumes.

What does joint aspiration do?

A trained clinician removes fluid from the joint with a needle. This can reduce pressure and provide fluid for analysis when infection, gout or another inflammatory cause is being considered.
