What should you know about burning and itching eyes?

The thin skin around the eyes reacts easily to cosmetics, cleansers, hair products, nail products, airborne allergens, and rubbing. Contact dermatitis may cause itchy, burning, swollen, or scaly eyelids. Atopic dermatitis can affect sensitive skin and may flare with dryness. Hives can cause short-lived itchy swelling, while psoriasis, lichen planus, scabies, or a skin yeast infection may produce other patterns.

Eye-surface irritation and eyelid disease can feel similar, so the exact site matters: skin symptoms, a gritty eye, discharge, light sensitivity, and vision changes point to different next steps.

Pause eye makeup, fragranced products, and any newly introduced skincare. Rinse the skin gently with clean water, avoid rubbing, and use a cool compress over closed lids. Do not put skin creams, essential oils, or leftover prescription medicine into the eye. Contact lenses should be removed if they worsen discomfort; arrange clinical advice before wearing them again.

Seek urgent assessment for reduced or blurred vision, severe eye pain, marked light sensitivity, injury, chemical exposure, trouble opening the eye, or swelling that affects vision. Prompt care is also needed for pus-like discharge, fever, rapidly worsening redness, or swelling around one eye. Recurrent symptoms deserve review to identify a trigger and protect the eyelid skin.

Ask whether the problem is on the eyelid, eye surface, or both; which products or allergens may be involved; what treatment is safe near the eye; and when contact lenses or cosmetics can be resumed.
