What should you know about burn cellulitis?

A burn disrupts the skin barrier, allowing bacteria to enter more easily. Infection may show as redness that expands beyond the original injury, increasing warmth, tenderness, swelling, cloudy drainage, or a worsening smell. Fever, chills, weakness, or red streaks can signal that the illness is becoming more serious. Cellulitis can also start through a small crack, blister, or fungal infection such as athlete's foot, not only through a dramatic burn.

The edge of redness can be gently marked with a pen to help show whether it is spreading, but this does not replace medical care. A clinician may clean the wound, assess depth, and decide whether antibiotics or other treatment is needed.

Cover the burn with a clean, non-stick dressing and wash your hands before and after touching it. Keep the area raised when practical to reduce swelling, and drink fluids if you can. Do not break blisters, apply butter or oils, or use leftover antibiotics. Tell the clinician about diabetes, immune problems, medicines, allergies, and when the burn occurred, as these details can change wound care.

Get urgent care for rapidly spreading redness, severe or escalating pain, marked swelling, fever with weakness or confusion, red streaks, blackened tissue, or a burn on the face, hands, feet, genitals, or a major joint. Emergency help is needed for breathing difficulty, faintness, confusion, or signs that infection is affecting the whole body. Do not wait for a wound to drain before seeking assessment.

Ask how deep the burn appears, whether cellulitis is present, how often to change the dressing, and which symptoms mean the infection is worsening. Ask whether you need wound review, tetanus advice, or specialist care, especially if you have diabetes or reduced immunity.
