Short answer

Bumpy sunburn usually reflects inflamed, irritated skin after ultraviolet exposure and needs gentle cooling, moisture, and monitoring for blisters or infection.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the bumps may mean

Sunburn damages the outer skin barrier, causing redness, warmth, swelling, tenderness, and sometimes small raised areas. Fluid-filled bumps are blisters; do not pop them because the covering helps protect the raw skin beneath. Itching and later peeling can occur as the skin repairs itself. A rash that appears after sun exposure can have other causes, including a light-sensitive reaction, so an unusual pattern deserves assessment.

Comfort measures

Move out of the sun and use a cool, damp cloth or a cool shower for short periods. Pat the skin dry, then apply a plain fragrance-free moisturiser while it is slightly damp; an emollient can support the damaged barrier. Drink fluids and wear loose, soft clothing. Avoid ice directly on the skin, scrubbing, peeling loose skin, and products containing perfume or strong active ingredients. Keep blisters intact and covered with a clean, non-stick dressing if they rub against clothing.

When to seek medical care

Seek prompt medical help for extensive blistering, severe pain, marked swelling, fever, chills, vomiting, dizziness, confusion, fainting, or signs of dehydration. Arrange medical advice if the skin becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen, or draining, as these changes can signal infection. Get urgent care for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or symptoms after a heat-related exposure. A clinician can decide whether a prescription treatment such as a topical corticosteroid is appropriate; do not apply one to open skin without advice.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the bumps are blisters or another sun-related rash, how to dress any open areas, and which moisturiser is suitable. Mention medicines, skincare products, or medical conditions that increase sun sensitivity, and ask when it is safe to return to sun exposure.

Questions people ask

Should you pop bumps from a sunburn?

No. Leave intact blisters alone and protect them with a clean, non-stick dressing if needed.

Can bumpy sunburn peel?

Yes. Peeling may follow inflammation; let loose skin shed naturally and keep the area moisturised.
