Bumpy Skin Rash: Possible Causes and Care

Atopic Dermatitis often causes dry, itchy, inflamed patches. Contact Dermatitis can follow exposure to a product, plant, fabric, or metal. Heat Rash tends to affect sweaty or covered areas. Psoriasis may form well-defined, scaly plaques. Ringworm can create an enlarging scaly edge, while Scabies often causes intense itch and may affect close contacts. Intertrigo develops where skin rubs together, and Drug Rash can appear after a medicine is started.

The rash's distribution matters: note whether it is on one side or both, in skin folds, around hair follicles, or across the trunk. Record new medicines, foods, products, travel, heat, and contact with anyone itchy.

Clean gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and use a fragrance-free moisturiser. Keep folds cool and dry, wear loose clothing, and avoid scratching or shaving the area until the cause is clearer. Stop a newly introduced cosmetic or detergent if exposure is plausible, but do not stop an essential prescribed medicine without medical advice. A clinician can choose treatment after examining the rash; avoid borrowing creams because treatment for eczema, fungus, and infestations differs.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or tongue, faintness, rapidly spreading hives, purple or blistering skin, severe pain, or fever with a very unwell feeling. Arrange prompt assessment for a rash after a new medicine, pus, spreading warmth, or involvement of the eyes, mouth, or genitals.

Ask what features support the diagnosis, whether testing is needed, which products or medicines could be contributing, and how to prevent recurrence.
