Bumpy Rash With Fever: What to Know

Chickenpox can cause an itchy rash that changes into fluid-filled spots and crusts, with new spots appearing over time. Cellulitis more often causes a localized area of red, hot, swollen, tender skin and can be accompanied by fever. A Drug Rash may begin after a new medicine and can spread. These conditions can overlap in appearance, so the timing of fever, rash, medicines, pain, and spread is clinically useful.

Contact a healthcare service promptly for advice and mention the fever, rash onset, all medicines, recent illness, and whether the rash is painful or itchy. Rest, drink fluids if you can, and avoid scratching. Keep distance from pregnant people, newborns, and anyone with reduced immunity until an infectious cause is excluded. Do not start leftover antibiotics or stop a prescribed medicine without advice, unless emergency clinicians tell you to.

Call emergency services for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or tongue, confusion, faintness, severe weakness, a rapidly spreading rash, purple or bruise-like spots, skin peeling, blisters, severe pain, or sores in the eyes or mouth. Urgent assessment is also needed when a child is unusually sleepy, difficult to wake, or unable to drink.

Ask whether the rash could be infectious or medicine-related, whether you should avoid close contact, what warning signs to watch for, and how soon reassessment is needed.
