Bumpy Rash on the Hands: What to Know

Frequent handwashing, cleaning chemicals, solvents, gloves, metals, and fragrances can cause or worsen Contact Dermatitis. Atopic Dermatitis may leave itchy, dry, cracked skin. Tiny very itchy blisters on the sides of fingers can occur with some forms of hand eczema. Scabies can cause severe night-time itch and may involve spaces between the fingers. Ringworm may produce a scaly edge. Psoriasis can cause thicker, sharply outlined scaling. A clinician may need to inspect the palms, backs of the hands, and nails.

Rinse with lukewarm water, use a mild fragrance-free cleanser, and apply a thick plain moisturizer after washing. Wear protective gloves for wet work, with cotton liners if sweating is a problem, and remove rings while washing. Avoid picking, fragranced creams, and unneeded antiseptics. Note every task or product that precedes a flare and whether symptoms improve away from work or home.

Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, rapidly worsening swelling, severe pain, blistering, skin peeling, or purple spots. Arrange prompt assessment for pus, spreading redness, warmth, fever, deep cracks, or difficulty moving the fingers. Get medical advice when the rash persists, interferes with work, or affects sleep.
