What should you know about bumpy heat rash?

Short answer
Bumpy heat rash happens when blocked sweat ducts trap perspiration beneath the skin, causing small itchy or prickly spots that often improve when the skin is cooled and kept dry.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common clue
- Itching or prickling after heat and sweating.
- Helpful step
- Cool, dry skin and loose breathable clothing.
How heat rash appears
The bumps may be red, skin-coloured, or filled with clear fluid. They commonly appear in skin folds or beneath tight clothing where heat, sweat, and friction collect. Stinging or itching can be more noticeable after exercise, outdoor heat, or a warm room. Heat rash usually affects the surface of the skin; a deep, painful lump, spreading redness, or a rash with fever suggests another problem and should not be assumed to be heat rash.
Cooling the skin
Move to a cooler place, loosen clothing, and rinse or gently wash away sweat. Pat dry rather than rubbing. Wear breathable fabrics and take breaks from heat or strenuous activity while the rash settles. Avoid oily products, heavy occlusive creams, and scratching, which can worsen blocked ducts or break the skin. A bland emollient may help dryness, while a clinician may recommend a topical corticosteroid for selected inflammation and for a limited period.
When to get help
Contact a clinician if the rash is not improving after cooling and gentle care, keeps returning, becomes painful, or develops crusting or pus. Seek urgent help for fever, marked swelling, severe pain, dizziness, confusion, or breathing difficulty. These symptoms can indicate infection, heat illness, or a serious allergic reaction rather than uncomplicated heat rash.
Questions to ask
Does this pattern fit heat rash or another skin rash? Could a product, medicine, or infection be contributing? Which moisturiser is suitable for my skin? How should I use a topical corticosteroid if one is advised?

Questions people ask
Can heat rash spread?
It can appear across areas exposed to heat, sweat, and friction. New areas should still be checked if the pattern changes or symptoms become severe.
Should I scratch bumpy heat rash?
Try not to scratch. Scratching can damage the surface and make infection more likely; cooling and gentle care are safer first steps.
