Bumps Under the Skin: What to Know

A small itchy or red bump may fit Folliculitis or Heat Rash. Rough clusters can occur with Keratosis Pilaris, while a smooth pale bump may be Milia. Lichen Planus can cause persistent patterned skin changes. These possibilities overlap, and a clinician may need to feel the area and inspect the surface before naming the cause.

Do not repeatedly press, puncture, or massage the lump. Clean gently, reduce friction from tight clothing or equipment, and note when it began, whether it moves, and whether the skin over it changes. For itch, a clinician may discuss an Antihistamine Treatment. Cryotherapy (Lesion Removal) is appropriate only for selected surface lesions, not every lump beneath the skin.

Book an assessment for a bump that grows, remains unexplained, becomes hard or fixed, repeatedly returns, or causes ongoing pain. Seek prompt care for fever, pus, spreading warmth or redness, severe pain, or sudden swelling.
