What should you know about bumps on pubes after shaving?

Shaving removes the visible hair but can leave a sharp edge that curls into the surrounding skin as it grows. The result may be a red, itchy or tender bump. Follicles can also become inflamed from friction, sweat, bacteria on equipment or repeated close passes. A smooth, itchy rash may have a different cause. Bumps on the hair-bearing pubic mound are not the same as lesions on the vulva, penis or scrotum, where products and treatments need extra caution.

Take a break from shaving and keep the area clean and dry. Use lukewarm water, a gentle cleanser and loose underwear; a cool compress can ease irritation. Do not squeeze, scratch or lift hairs with a needle. Avoid fragranced wipes, strong acids and rough scrubs. For future shaving, soften hair with water, apply gel, use a clean sharp razor and make fewer strokes in the direction the hair grows. Trimming may cause less skin trauma.

Book an assessment when bumps repeatedly return, leave dark marks or scars, last beyond the expected irritation, or contain pus. Prompt review is appropriate for spreading warmth and redness, significant swelling, fever, open sores, blisters, discharge or painful urination. A clinician can examine the exact site and discuss whether treatment for folliculitis, ingrown hairs or another condition is appropriate.

Ask whether the bumps are confined to hair follicles, which cleanser or medicine is safe for the site, how to prevent recurrence, and whether laser hair removal is suitable for your skin and hair pattern.
