Bumps on neck after shaving

Neck hair may grow in different directions, so shaving against growth or pressing firmly can leave cut hairs pointing back toward the skin. The resulting razor bumps may itch, sting, or become tender. Folliculitis can produce similar hair-centred spots. Rough, persistent bumps outside recently shaved areas may fit keratosis pilaris instead. Sweat, collars, and repeated friction can prolong irritation.

Let the skin settle before shaving again. Cleanse gently, use warm water and shaving lubrication, and make light strokes in the direction of growth. Keep the razor clean and avoid repeated passes. Do not pick, squeeze, or dig for trapped hairs. Moisturise with a fragrance-free product. If the cycle continues, ask about topical treatment or laser hair removal.

Seek medical advice for pus, increasing warmth, spreading redness, fever, painful deep lumps, scarring, or frequent recurrence. Prompt review is appropriate for a persistent sore, bleeding area, or a bump that changes rather than settling like the others. Urgent help is needed for facial or neck swelling that affects breathing or swallowing.
