Small, smooth, evenly arranged bumps may be a normal anatomical variation, while a new irregular bump can reflect irritation or inflammation. Folliculitis is more likely when bumps sit around hairs on nearby skin. Heat, sweat, and friction can contribute to a heat rash. Other skin conditions, including lichen planus or milia, can also create raised areas. Pain, itching, burning, discharge, sores, or recent sexual exposure changes the assessment and should be discussed confidentially.

Rinse gently with water, dry by patting, and avoid fragranced soaps, antiseptics, squeezing, and unprescribed creams. Pause sexual contact if it causes pain or until a clinician has assessed a new unexplained change. Do not apply acids or attempt to freeze or remove a bump yourself. A clinician may inspect the area and recommend testing or treatment based on its appearance.

Arrange prompt medical review for a new or changing bump, an open sore, bleeding, discharge, marked swelling, painful urination, or pain after sexual contact. Seek urgent care for severe swelling, inability to pass urine, fever with rapidly worsening redness, or sudden severe pain. A sexual-health or dermatology clinician can provide a private assessment.
