What should you know about bumps after shaving the bikini area?

The bikini area has coarse hair, skin folds, moisture, and friction, which can make post-shaving irritation more noticeable. A cut hair may turn back into the skin and create a tender or itchy bump. Folliculitis can cause clusters of red bumps or small pustules around hairs. Keratosis pilaris is another possibility when rough bumps are longstanding and also appear elsewhere. A bump in this area is not automatically an infection or a sexually transmitted condition.

Stop shaving and waxing the affected skin until it is calm. Rinse gently, pat dry, and wear loose breathable clothing to reduce rubbing. Do not squeeze, lance, or pull at a hair under the skin. For future shaving, soften the hair, use a clean sharp razor, apply shaving gel, move in the direction of growth, and avoid repeated strokes. Do not put fragranced products or strong exfoliants on vulvar or broken skin unless a clinician has advised it.

Arrange an assessment if bumps recur, become deep or very painful, drain pus, or leave scars. Seek prompt care when redness or warmth spreads, swelling increases, fever develops, or walking becomes difficult. Painful sores, blisters, unusual discharge, or symptoms unrelated to hair follicles also deserve a clinician’s review because shaving bumps may not be the cause.
