Bullous impetigo on the face: what to know

A facial blister may be soft, clear or cloudy, and easy to rupture during washing or sleep. After it opens, a moist patch may dry into crusting skin. The infection can occur around the nose or mouth and may move to nearby skin through rubbing or contaminated hands. Facial redness can have several causes, so the appearance alone cannot confirm impetigo. Atopic dermatitis or another irritated patch may also become infected when the skin barrier is broken.

Arrange prompt medical advice, and mention exactly how close the sores are to the eyes, lips, or nostrils. Clean gently, pat dry, and cover areas that can be covered without pressing on the face. Wash hands before and after care; keep towels, pillowcases, cosmetics, and razors separate. Avoid picking, shaving over, or applying non-prescribed products to the sores. A clinician may recommend antibiotics for skin infection; topical antibiotic therapy is used only when appropriate for the site and extent.

Seek urgent care if the eyelid or area around the eye becomes swollen, painful, red, or difficult to open, or if vision changes. Rapid spread, marked tenderness, fever, worsening swelling, or feeling faint also needs prompt assessment. Do not wait for a routine appointment if a child seems unusually sleepy, is drinking poorly, or has sores spreading across the face.

Ask whether the eye area is involved, how to clean and cover the face safely, whether household contacts need advice, and when school, nursery, work, or close contact can resume. Check which cream or medicine is suitable near the eyes.
