What should you know about a bug bite on the lip?

Lips can swell noticeably after a small local reaction because their tissue is soft and highly visible. The change may be limited to one spot, with itch, warmth, or a tender bump. Similar swelling can follow contact with food, lip products, or another irritant, and angioedema can affect the lips without a typical bite mark.

Think about when it began, whether the swelling is increasing, and any new food, medicine, cosmetic, or dental product. Do not assume the cause from appearance alone.

Rinse the area gently with water and apply a cool compress wrapped in clean cloth. Avoid squeezing, scratching, licking the area repeatedly, or applying household remedies. Pause new lip products until the swelling settles. A pharmacist or clinician can recommend an appropriate antihistamine or other treatment after considering your health, medicines, and the inside of your mouth. Take a clear photo to compare changes.

Call emergency services immediately for difficulty breathing or swallowing, throat or tongue swelling, wheezing, dizziness, collapse, or rapidly spreading swelling. Seek same-day care for worsening pain, pus, fever, marked redness, a blistering reaction, or swelling that does not begin to settle. Do not wait for a bite mark if the mouth or airway is involved.
