Bug Bite Hives: What to Know

Hives are raised patches or welts that may be pale, pink, or similar to the surrounding skin. They can appear around a bite or in separate areas, and individual welts may fade while new ones form elsewhere. Itch is common; burning or stinging can also occur. Hives after an insect bite reflect an immune reaction and do not by themselves prove that the insect was identified.

Swelling deeper in the skin, especially around the lips, eyelids, tongue, or throat, is called Angioedema. Hives can occur with angioedema, but the two are not the same appearance. A clinician may ask about the insect, timing, medicines, foods, and previous reactions.

Move away from the insect and remove a visible stinger by a safe method if one is present. Wash the area gently, avoid scratching, and use a cool compress through cloth. Do not apply a product that has caused irritation before. Keep a record of when the welts began and whether they move or fade. Seek medical advice promptly for persistent or recurrent hives, painful skin, facial swelling, or a reaction that is becoming more extensive.
