What should you know about bsa audiometry?

During pure-tone audiometry, you usually wear headphones or insert earphones and respond whenever you hear a tone. The sounds vary in pitch and loudness, allowing the audiologist to map the softest sounds detected by each ear. Speech testing may also assess how clearly words are heard at a comfortable level.

The pattern can help distinguish a problem involving the outer or middle ear from one involving the inner ear or hearing nerve. Earwax buildup, fluid, noise exposure, ageing and conditions such as Meniere's disease can affect hearing, but the test result must be interpreted with your symptoms and examination.

Bring details of when the hearing change began, whether one ear is affected, and any tinnitus, ear pain, discharge, dizziness or noise exposure. Tell the service about previous ear surgery and hearing devices. Avoid loud sound before testing when possible, because temporary changes can make results harder to interpret.

The test is non-invasive and you can ask for instructions to be repeated. Stay still, concentrate on the sounds and respond only when you are confident you heard one. If earwax is blocking the canal, the clinician may address that before relying on the result.

Arrange assessment for persistent hearing difficulty, one-sided change, or problems following conversations. Seek urgent medical help for sudden hearing loss, severe vertigo, new facial weakness, severe headache, or hearing change after a serious injury. Audiometry can support assessment but does not replace urgent examination when warning signs are present.

Ask what type of hearing loss the result suggests, whether earwax or another treatable problem could be contributing, and whether repeat testing is needed. If dizziness or ringing is present, ask whether further assessment for Meniere's disease or another ear condition is appropriate.
