Using a Brush to Remove Cradle Cap

Short answer
A soft baby brush can gently loosen cradle-cap scales after they soften, but never scrape, pick, or brush hard because the scalp can break and become infected.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why brushing helps
Cradle cap causes greasy or flaky scales on a baby’s scalp and is a form of infantile seborrheic dermatitis. The scales cling to the skin, so brushing them while dry can pull at the scalp. Softening them first makes loose flakes easier to lift during washing. Cradle cap is not caused by poor hygiene, and a few remaining scales do not mean the routine has failed. It may return for a while as the scalp’s oil production changes.
A gentle routine
Wash your hands, then use a baby-safe emollient or a small amount of suitable oil only as advised for your child. Leave the softening product briefly, wash the scalp with a mild baby shampoo, and use a clean, soft-bristled brush to move in gentle strokes. Brush only scales that release easily; stop if the skin becomes pink, sore, or wet. Rinse away residue and pat dry. Do not use adult dandruff products, essential oils, sharp combs, or fingernails unless a healthcare professional specifically recommends a product for your baby.
When to contact a clinician
Ask for medical advice if the scalp is very red, swollen, cracked, bleeding, oozing, smelly, or painful, or if your baby seems unwell. Review is also sensible when the rash spreads beyond the scalp, affects the eyelids or skin folds, causes noticeable hair loss, or does not improve with gentle care. A clinician may suggest a prescribed treatment, such as an appropriate antifungal product, when inflammation is more extensive.
Questions to bring
Ask which softening product is suitable for your baby, how often to wash and brush, and whether the scalp changes suggest infection or another rash. Check before using any medicated shampoo, cream, or antifungal treatment.

Questions people ask
Can I brush off every scale in one session?
No. Remove only flakes that loosen easily; forcing attached scales can injure the scalp.
Is cradle cap a sign that the baby is dirty?
No. Cradle cap is a common skin condition and is not caused by poor hygiene.
