What should you know about bruised toe nail pain?

A blow, tight footwear, or repeated toe impact can break tiny vessels beneath the nail. Blood collects in a confined space, creating pressure and a dark red, purple, or black area. The toe may throb, feel tender, or hurt more when walking. The nail can later lift as the injured nail plate separates from the nail bed. Rest the foot, elevate it when practical, and use a wrapped cold pack for short periods during the early soreness. Choose roomy footwear and keep the nail clean and dry.
