What should you know about bruised nail growing out?

A subungual haematoma is blood trapped beneath the nail after pressure or impact. As the nail plate advances, the dark area should gradually shift away from the cuticle rather than spread into freshly formed nail. The colour may change as the trapped blood ages, and the nail can feel loose or develop a ridge. A toenail often takes longer to replace than a fingernail, so visible change can be gradual.

Keep the nail clean and dry, trim only a loose edge, and cover it with a light dressing if footwear rubs. Choose roomy shoes and avoid picking, drilling, or puncturing the nail at home.
