Brucellosis etiology: what causes it?

Short answer
Brucellosis etiology is infection with Brucella bacteria, acquired through infected animals or contaminated animal products.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Cause
- Brucella bacteria
- Common routes
- Unpasteurised dairy, animal contact, or inhaled contaminated material
- Also known as
- Malta fever
What the cause means
Brucella can enter the body when a person consumes unpasteurised milk or cheese, handles infected animal tissue, or breathes contaminated droplets in an occupational setting. Goats, sheep, cattle, camels, pigs and other animals can carry different Brucella species. The bacteria may remain in the body and cause an illness that develops gradually, with fever, tiredness, sweating, joint discomfort or muscle aches. A person’s symptoms do not identify the source by themselves; recent food, animal and work exposure matters.
Brucellosis is not generally spread by ordinary casual contact between people. The infection can affect several organs, so a clinician may consider the full history rather than treating one symptom in isolation.
What to do next
Tell a clinician if you have had unpasteurised dairy, slaughterhouse or veterinary work, assisted with animal births, or handled an animal that may be infected. Mention when the exposure occurred and whether anyone else who shared the food became unwell. A blood test may support diagnosis, alongside examination and other tests chosen for your symptoms. If brucellosis is diagnosed, take the prescribed antibiotic treatment for the full advised course and attend follow-up appointments.
When to seek care
Arrange medical assessment for an unexplained or recurring fever after relevant animal or food exposure, especially when it comes with drenching night sweats, joint pain or muscle aches. Seek urgent help for confusion, severe weakness, breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting, or a severe headache with a stiff neck. These warning signs need prompt assessment regardless of whether brucellosis is eventually confirmed.
Questions for your doctor
Could my food, animal or workplace exposure fit brucellosis? Which tests will clarify the diagnosis? Do I need testing for a particular complication? How should I take treatment, and what follow-up symptoms should I report?

Questions people ask
Can brucellosis come from food?
Yes. Unpasteurised milk and dairy products from an infected animal can transmit Brucella bacteria.
Can symptoms reveal the cause?
No. Fever, sweating and aches overlap with other illnesses, so exposure history and medical testing are useful.
