What is brucellosis?

Brucella bacteria can enter through the digestive system, eyes, airways or damaged skin. Risk is higher with close contact with livestock, animal births, carcasses, raw dairy foods or laboratory samples. The illness may begin gradually, so the exposure history can be as useful as the symptoms.

People may experience fever, chills, sweating at night, low energy, headache, muscle aches or joint pain. Brucellosis can affect several body systems, and untreated illness may linger or recur.

Contact a clinician if compatible symptoms follow an animal, food or laboratory exposure. Explain when the exposure happened and whether dairy products were pasteurised. A blood test and other laboratory work may be used; tell the laboratory if brucellosis is suspected.

Treatment generally involves more than one antibiotic chosen by a clinician. Follow the schedule carefully, report side effects promptly and attend any requested follow-up, because symptoms can improve before the infection has fully cleared.

Seek prompt medical advice for ongoing fever, drenching sweats, unexplained fatigue or aches after a relevant exposure. Get urgent help for severe headache with confusion, trouble breathing, fainting, marked dehydration or a sudden deterioration.
