What should you know about brucella fever?

Brucellosis can cause a fever that rises and settles, along with chills, tiredness, night sweats, headache, muscle aches, or joint pain. The fever itself does not identify brucellosis: respiratory infections, urinary infections, skin infections, and common viral illnesses can also cause high temperature. The exposure history changes the level of suspicion. Mention raw milk or cheese, livestock contact, animal birthing materials, laboratory work, and travel to a clinician.

Rest, drink fluids as tolerated, and record when the fever appears and what other symptoms occur. Use a thermometer if available and follow label directions for any fever medicine that is safe for you. Arrange medical review when fever persists, returns, or follows a plausible brucella exposure. Do not start leftover antibiotics; the choice of treatment depends on the diagnosis and may require specific laboratory samples.

Get urgent help for trouble breathing, chest pain, confusion, collapse, a seizure, severe dehydration, or a severe headache with a stiff neck. Seek prompt review for persistent or recurrent fever with night sweats, unusual weakness, or new joint, back, testicular, or neurological symptoms. A person with a weakened immune system, pregnancy, or serious long-term illness should seek advice earlier when fever develops.
