What should you know about brownish red eyes?

A general red or brownish tint may occur when blood vessels on the eye surface become widened. A sharply defined dark-red patch on the white of the eye can be a surface bleed, while diffuse redness with watering or itch may fit allergic conjunctivitis. Sticky discharge and irritation can occur with conjunctivitis. Smoke, dust, contact lenses, rubbing, and dry air can also irritate the surface. These appearances overlap, so colour alone cannot identify the cause.

Do not rub the eye, and pause contact lens use until it feels normal or a clinician advises otherwise. Rinse away obvious irritants with clean water, wash your hands, and use a cool clean compress for itch or irritation. Avoid sharing towels or eye products if discharge is present. Arrange a clinical assessment if the change persists, keeps returning, or follows an injury; an examination can check the cornea, eye pressure, and vision.

Seek urgent medical care for severe eye pain, new blurred or reduced vision, marked light sensitivity, a chemical splash, a penetrating injury, or redness with nausea and headache. Prompt assessment is also sensible when one eye becomes very red while a contact lens is in use, or when swelling and discharge are worsening. A painless surface patch may still need review if it does not clear or follows a bleeding problem or injury.

Ask what part of the eye looks discoloured, whether the cornea is affected, and whether you should stop lenses or any eye drops. Mention when the colour began, whether it is spreading, and any itch, discharge, pain, light sensitivity, injury, or vision change.
