Brown vaginal discharge between periods

A brief trace may occur around hormonal changes or as a period finishes, but colour cannot reveal where the blood came from. Your cycle pattern, contraception, pregnancy possibility and other symptoms shape the next steps.

Blood becomes brown after oxidation, so light spotting can colour vaginal fluid. Changes in hormonal contraception, irregular ovulation, irritation, a cervical polyp or inflammation can all cause bleeding outside a period. In early pregnancy, bleeding has several possible explanations and should be considered alongside pain and pregnancy test results.

Chlamydia and gonorrhoea may present with bleeding between periods or changed discharge. Pelvic inflammatory disease may present with abnormal discharge together with lower abdominal pain, pain during sex, fever or bleeding outside the usual cycle. These symptoms overlap with other conditions, so examination and testing are more informative than colour.

Mark the discharge and bleeding on a calendar, including the start and end of each period. Record amount, odour, pelvic pain, itching, urinary discomfort, bleeding after sex, contraception changes and any missed pills. Take a pregnancy test if pregnancy is possible and follow its instructions.

Book a healthcare visit when spotting continues, returns across cycles or differs from your established pattern. Depending on your history, care may include a pelvic examination, swabs, pregnancy testing or imaging. Do not assume thrush and use antifungal treatment solely because discharge is present; thrush and bacterial or sexually transmitted infections require different management.

Get urgent help for heavy bleeding, fainting, marked weakness, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, or a positive pregnancy test with pain or bleeding. Fever, worsening pelvic pain, vomiting or feeling very unwell also calls for prompt care. Bleeding after menopause belongs in a separate category and should always be assessed.

Ask whether the pattern fits a contraception-related change, what pregnancy and infection tests are appropriate, whether the cervix needs examination, and how long to monitor before returning. Mention your usual cycle clearly so the clinician can compare the new pattern with your baseline.
