Brown spotting in the middle of your cycle

Light spotting may coincide with hormonal changes around ovulation, follow sex, or occur with hormonal contraception. Cervical irritation, infection, polyps, and fibroids are other possibilities. The timing offers a clue, but colour and timing cannot establish the cause.

Brown blood has usually taken longer to leave the uterus or vagina. Consider whether the spotting happens at a similar point in each cycle, occurs after sex, began after a contraceptive change, or comes with pelvic pain, unusual discharge, itching, pain during sex, or discomfort when urinating.

Bleeding after sex, persistent bleeding between periods, and a noticeable change from your usual pattern deserve review. Conditions affecting the cervix or womb can present with irregular bleeding, but the symptom does not indicate which condition is present.

Mark the first day of each period and each spotting episode on a calendar. Include the amount, colour, pain, discharge, sex, and contraceptive use. If pregnancy is possible, take an appropriate pregnancy test and seek healthcare advice about any bleeding. Book an appointment when spotting repeats, persists, follows sex, or is new after your cycles had been predictable.

Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe or escalating pelvic pain, fainting, marked dizziness, weakness, fever, or feeling acutely unwell. If you could be pregnant, one-sided pain, shoulder-tip pain, or faintness with spotting needs emergency assessment. Otherwise, arrange a timely clinic visit for bleeding after sex, foul-smelling discharge, or recurrent mid-cycle bleeding.

Ask whether a pregnancy test, infection test, cervical assessment, pelvic examination, or ultrasound fits your symptoms. Review any contraception or medicines that may affect bleeding, and find out which pattern changes require another appointment. Mention when your most recent cervical screening was performed and any previous abnormal result.
