Brown discharge and missed miscarriage

The brown colour commonly comes from blood that has remained in the vagina before leaving. A missed miscarriage means a pregnancy has stopped developing but pregnancy tissue remains in the womb, and it may cause no obvious bleeding or cramping.

Light brown discharge has several possible explanations in pregnancy, including minor bleeding from a sensitive cervix. Changes in nausea, breast tenderness or other pregnancy symptoms are also not enough to diagnose a loss. Ultrasound findings are central to assessing whether the pregnancy is developing as expected.

Sometimes a scan is inconclusive because the pregnancy is earlier than anticipated. In that situation, the clinician may arrange another scan and blood tests before making a diagnosis. This waiting period can be distressing, but it helps avoid conclusions from a single symptom.

Tell your maternity or gynaecology team about new discharge or bleeding. Record when it began, its amount and colour, whether clots or tissue appeared, and whether you have cramps, fever or an unpleasant smell. A pad can make changes easier to observe.

If a missed miscarriage is confirmed, possible approaches include waiting for tissue to pass, medication, or a procedure to empty the womb. The suitable choice depends on your symptoms, scan findings, medical history and preferences. Your clinician should explain what to expect and how follow-up confirms completion.

Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe or increasing abdominal pain, fainting, marked dizziness, shoulder-tip pain, difficulty breathing or feeling acutely unwell. These features require assessment regardless of the discharge colour.

Contact your clinical team promptly for fever, chills, worsening pelvic pain or unpleasant-smelling discharge, as these may accompany infection. Also get advice if bleeding continues or you are unsure how to follow a previously agreed management plan.
