What should you know about brown crust on skin?

A thin crust may form after a scratch, insect bite, pimple, or eczema flare. Atopic Dermatitis can make skin itchy and cracked, so repeated rubbing may leave darker crust. Crusting Skin may also occur when fluid dries over an irritated or infected area. Colour changes as blood and serum dry, so brown does not identify the cause. Location, tenderness, warmth, drainage, and how quickly it appeared matter more than colour alone.

Wash gently with clean water and mild cleanser, pat dry, and cover an open spot with a clean dressing if it may rub against clothing. Do not peel the crust, squeeze the area, or apply alcohol, perfume, or harsh exfoliants. Keep hands clean before touching it. If the area is itchy, ask a clinician about a suitable treatment rather than using leftover antibiotics or steroid creams.

Seek prompt medical advice if redness spreads, pain or warmth increases, swelling develops, pus appears, or red streaks extend from the area. Fever, facial swelling, eye involvement, a rapidly worsening rash, or a wound that will not stop bleeding requires urgent attention. Arrange an appointment for a persistent or repeatedly crusting patch, especially if it changes shape or colour.

Ask what may have produced the crust, whether the skin barrier is inflamed or infected, how to dress it, and which warning signs should prompt same-day care.
