Splinting a broken scaphoid: care and warning signs

Wear it exactly as instructed, keep it dry, and avoid gripping, pushing or lifting with the injured hand. If the splint cracks, becomes wet, loses its shape or no longer supports the wrist, contact the treating service for replacement rather than repairing or reshaping it yourself.

The scaphoid is a small wrist bone near the base of the thumb. A fracture often follows a fall onto an outstretched hand and may cause tenderness in the hollow beside the thumb, swelling and pain with gripping. The bone's blood supply enters through a limited route, so fracture location and displacement influence healing.

Initial X-rays do not always show a scaphoid fracture clearly. When examination still raises concern, the wrist may remain splinted while repeat or different imaging is arranged. This protects a possible fracture until the diagnosis is settled.

Keep the hand raised when swelling is troublesome and move the uncovered fingers regularly if this is comfortable. Do not insert objects beneath the splint, trim its edges, remove its padding or expose it to water or heat. Check the skin around its edges for rubbing and keep scheduled fracture-clinic appointments even if pain improves.

Follow-up imaging helps show the fracture pattern and healing. A cast may replace the temporary splint. Surgery may be discussed when the bone fragments are displaced, the fracture is less likely to stay stable, or healing has not progressed as expected.

Get urgent help if fingers become blue, pale or cold, or if severe pain, swelling, numbness or tingling persists after raising the hand. Inability to move the fingers, an open wound, bleeding through the dressing, or a splint that feels increasingly tight also needs prompt assessment.

Contact the fracture clinic if the splint becomes loose as swelling falls, develops a soft or broken area, causes rubbing or an unpleasant smell, or if pain starts worsening again. Do not drive while the support limits safe control of the vehicle.

Ask where the fracture lies, whether it has shifted, and whether another scan is needed. Confirm when the splint can come off, which hand and finger exercises are suitable, what activities could disturb healing, and what findings would change the plan from a cast to surgical fixation.
