BrdU flow cytometry explained

BrdU, short for bromodeoxyuridine, resembles a building block of DNA. Cells that are copying DNA can incorporate it into newly formed DNA. The laboratory uses a labelled antibody to detect BrdU, while a flow cytometer examines individual cells and records their signals.

The pattern can separate cells that are synthesising DNA from cells in other parts of the cell cycle. BrdU findings do not diagnose cancer by themselves. Interpretation depends on the specimen, the cell population selected for analysis, other laboratory markers and the clinical question.

Confirm whether BrdU will be added to cells in the laboratory or given before a sample is collected, because preparation and safety instructions differ. Tell the team about pregnancy, breastfeeding, allergies, medicines and previous reactions to injected substances. Follow the specific directions for blood or bone marrow collection.

When the report is available, review it with the clinician who requested the test. Ask which cells were analysed, whether the sample quality was adequate and how the proliferation pattern changes the next decision. Results are usually considered with microscopy, immunophenotyping, genetic findings and your clinical history rather than in isolation.

After a blood draw or bone marrow procedure, contact the care team for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, fever, worsening pain or bleeding that does not stop with firm pressure. Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, facial or throat swelling, fainting, chest pain or severe bleeding after an injection or sampling procedure.
