Braxton Hicks or gas?

Braxton Hicks usually feel like the whole womb becomes firm, then relaxes. They are often irregular and do not consistently move from one part of the abdomen to another. Gas can cause a sharp, squeezing, or bloated feeling that shifts location; it may improve after passing wind or having a bowel movement. Pregnancy can cause both sensations, so the distinction is not always clear. Reflux or stomach irritation can also cause upper abdominal discomfort, but that does not explain regular lower abdominal tightenings.

Pause activity and notice whether your abdomen becomes firm during each episode. Change position, walk gently if comfortable, and see whether passing wind or opening your bowels changes digestive discomfort. Eat slowly and choose smaller meals if bloating follows eating. Keep a record of timing, location, bowel symptoms, and any vaginal symptoms. Do not take medicines for gas or reflux in pregnancy without checking that they are suitable for you.

Seek prompt maternity advice for regular or worsening tightenings, pain that does not settle, vaginal bleeding, watery fluid, unusual discharge, pelvic pressure, lower back pain, fever, or reduced fetal movement once you have an established pattern. Emergency help is appropriate for severe constant pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, or serious illness. Gas should not be used to explain away these warning signs.

Ask how to time tightenings, which bowel symptoms are expected in pregnancy, and whether your pain location suggests digestive discomfort or needs examination. Ask which over-the-counter options your clinician considers suitable if reflux or bloating persists.
