What should you know about brainstem evoked response audiometry?

Short answer

Brainstem evoked response audiometry records electrical responses to sounds through skin sensors and helps clinicians assess hearing pathways without requiring spoken answers.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the test works

Small sensors are placed on the scalp and near the ears. Headphones or inserts deliver clicks or tones while the equipment records the timing and size of electrical signals travelling from the hearing nerve towards the brainstem. The person needs to remain still and relaxed; young children may need to sleep naturally or have sedation arranged by the clinical team.

The result is interpreted with symptoms, ear examination, and other hearing tests. Earwax Buildup or middle-ear problems can reduce sound reaching the inner ear, while conditions such as Meniere's Disease may cause hearing and balance symptoms that need a broader assessment.

How to prepare

Follow the clinic's instructions about eating, drinking, medicines, and sleep if sedation is planned. Wash away hair products so sensors adhere well, bring hearing aids or relevant reports, and tell the team about scalp sensitivity, seizures, sleep difficulties, or medicines that cause drowsiness.

During the recording, stay quiet and avoid unnecessary movement. The test does not require you to press a button or describe every sound. Ask how results will be shared and whether a standard Hearing Test or another examination is also needed.

When to seek care

The test itself is usually arranged as a planned assessment, not an emergency procedure. Seek urgent medical help for sudden hearing loss, new facial weakness, severe dizziness with neurological symptoms, or a severe headache rather than waiting for a scheduled test.

Questions for your doctor

Ask why this test is recommended, whether sedation is necessary, how long the recording may take, what could affect the reading, when results will be ready, and what follow-up is planned if the response differs between ears.

Questions people ask

Do I need to answer during the test?

No. The equipment records responses to sounds, so spoken answers are not the main part of the assessment.

Why might a child need special preparation?

Movement can interfere with recordings, so the team may plan natural sleep or discuss sedation when a child cannot stay settled.
