What should you know about brachytherapy Varian?

Varian is an equipment manufacturer, not a separate type of cancer therapy. The clinical team chooses the applicator or implant, calculates the radiation dose and checks its position for your particular tumour.

Brachytherapy is internal radiotherapy. A sealed radiation source is positioned inside the body or next to the area being treated, allowing the dose to be concentrated locally while limiting exposure farther away.

Some treatments use an afterloader to move a source through tubes into an applicator for a planned period and then withdraw it. Others use implanted seeds that may remain in place. The approach depends on the cancer site, treatment goal and anatomy.

Follow the centre's instructions about eating, medicines, bowel or bladder preparation and transport home. Tell the team about blood-thinning medicines, pregnancy possibility, implanted devices, allergies and any difficulty lying still.

Before treatment, confirm whether the source will be removed before you leave or whether seeds will stay in your body. If an implant remains, use the written guidance on contact with children or pregnant people and carry any treatment information your centre provides.

Contact the treatment team promptly for fever, worsening pain, heavy bleeding, increasing swelling, trouble passing urine, persistent vomiting or discharge with an unpleasant smell after the procedure. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, collapse or uncontrolled bleeding.

If a seed or part of an applicator appears to come out, do not handle it with bare hands. Keep other people away and call the radiation service immediately for instructions.

Ask which brachytherapy technique is planned, whether anaesthesia or imaging is needed, how the applicator is positioned, when the source is removed and what side effects are expected in the treated body area.

It is also useful to clarify who to call after hours and whether you need temporary precautions at home, follow-up imaging or a written implant card.
