What should you know about Bowen dermoscopy?

A dermatoscope combines magnification with lighting that reduces surface reflection. A dermatologist can inspect scale, colour distribution, tiny blood vessels, and the border of a patch more closely than with ordinary viewing. These findings may help distinguish Bowen’s disease from other scaly or inflamed lesions, but visual patterns can overlap. Dermoscopy is therefore an assessment step, not a final diagnosis.

Bring up a patch that is persistent, enlarging, repeatedly crusted, or different from nearby skin. Avoid covering it with makeup or irritating creams before assessment unless the clinic advises otherwise. Photographing the area at home can help you notice change, but a personal photograph cannot replace examination. If the dermatologist recommends sampling or removal, ask how the specimen will be assessed and how to care for the site.

Seek a timely dermatology review for a sore, bleeding, rapidly changing, or non-healing patch. Get prompt advice if treatment causes increasing pain, spreading redness, pus-like drainage, or bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure. A reassuring-looking image should not delay review when a lesion continues to change.

Ask what features were seen through the dermatoscope, what other diagnoses were considered, whether a biopsy is advisable, and when the area should be checked again if it is being monitored.
