What should you know about a swollen bottom inside lip?

A single soft bump inside the lower lip can occur after biting or rubbing the area and may represent a mucus-filled cyst from a minor salivary gland. Tenderness, warmth, redness, pus, fever, or a tooth problem can point towards infection. A new toothpaste, food, medicine, dental product, or cosmetic exposure can cause irritation or an allergic reaction.

Sudden swelling of the lips, tongue, face, or throat may be angioedema. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause, so note when it began, what changed beforehand, whether it is spreading, and whether breathing or swallowing feels different.

Rinse gently with cool water, avoid biting or squeezing the area, and pause any new oral or lip product until the cause is clearer. Soft foods and cool drinks may be more comfortable if chewing irritates it. Arrange dental or medical assessment if the swelling persists, returns, becomes painful, or forms a firm or non-healing lump.

Take a photo when the swelling is visible and bring the names of new medicines or products. A clinician may inspect the mouth, teeth, gums, and nearby skin before deciding whether observation, dental treatment, or another evaluation is needed.

Call emergency services immediately if lip swelling is accompanied by tongue or throat swelling, wheezing, trouble breathing, faintness, or difficulty swallowing. Seek same-day medical care for rapidly increasing swelling, fever with spreading redness, severe pain, or inability to drink.
